Why use Epsom Salt?

April 10, 2024 | News

Epsom salt is one of many naturally occurring mineral salts.  It is a compound of magnesium and sulfate found in rock-like formations.  The name “Epsom salt” comes from Epsom, located near London in England, where the salt was discovered about 400 years ago.

The chemical formula for magnesium sulfate is MgSO4. That means it can be broken down into magnesium and sulfate, a combination of sulfur and oxygen.  The salt consists of tiny, colourless crystals that resemble table salt.  However, table salt completely differs from Epsom salt since it contains sodium chloride.

Epsom salt contains magnesium, a mineral crucial to the human body’s functioning.  Some of magnesium’s key roles include keeping blood pressure regular, heart rhythm steady, and bones strong.  The other main ingredient, sulfate, is an essential mineral key to many biological processes.  It helps flush toxins, cleanse the liver, and assist in the formation of proteins in joints and brain tissue.

Health benefits of using Epsom Salt

Many people, including some healthcare professionals, claim Epsom salt is therapeutic and use it as an alternative treatment for several conditions.

By simply soaking your feet or entire body in a bath containing Epsom salts, you can increase internal levels of magnesium naturally.

  •  Boosts Magnesium Levels

Magnesium regulates over 300 enzymes and is essential in organizing many bodily functions.  These vital functions include muscle control, energy production, electrical impulses, and elimination of harmful toxins.  Alcoholism, severe diarrhea, malnutrition, or high calcium levels (hypercalcemia) can all cause hypomagnesemia or low magnesium levels.

  • Reduces Stress

Adequate magnesium levels are essential for sleep and stress management because magnesium helps your brain produce neurotransmitters that induce sleep and reduce stress.  Low magnesium levels may negatively affect sleep quality and stress.  Taking Epsom salt baths can reverse these issues by allowing your body to absorb magnesium through the skin.  Not only does magnesium help relax your muscles, but it can also help relax your mind.

  • Eliminates Toxins

The sulfates in Epsom salt assist the body in flushing out toxins.  This provides a heavy metal detox from the body’s cells, which can help lower the internal accumulation of harmful substances.  Human skin is a highly porous membrane.  Adding minerals like magnesium and sulfate to your bathwater sparks reverse osmosis, which pulls salt out of your body and dangerous toxins.

  • Exercise performance and recovery

A warm bath containing Epsom salt is known to ease pain and relieve inflammation.  This makes it a beneficial natural treatment for sore muscles, headaches (including migraines), and arthritis pain.  Soaking in warm water is one of the oldest forms of alternative therapy for arthritis.  If you include Epsom salt, the bath becomes so much more therapeutic.

  • Relieves constipation

Numerous studies have revealed that Epsom salt can be used to treat constipation.  Taken internally, Epsom salt acts as a detoxifying agent for colon cleansing.  The salt acts like a laxative by increasing water in the intestines and can temporarily relieve constipation.  However, it is strictly warned that Epsom salts should not be used to relieve constipation without the consultation of a physician.

  • Exfoliate

Epsom Salt has an incredible moisturizing effect on dry skin, helping you to both exfoliate dead skin cells on top and soften the layers of skin beneath the surface.

In the shower or bath, mix a handful of Epsom salt with a tablespoon of bath or olive oil and rub all over your wet skin to exfoliate and soften.  Rinse thoroughly.  To clean your face and exfoliate skin at the same time, mix a half-teaspoon of Epsom salt with your regular cleansing cream.  Gently massage into the skin and rinse with cold water.
