And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this: Your winter garden doesn’t start in winter… it starts now.

 A Season of Preparation

April is often misunderstood. Many think of it as a slow month — a pause between seasons. But in reality, it’s one of the most important planting windows of the year. The soil is still warm enough for seeds to germinate well, yet the cooler temperatures mean your plants won’t be under constant stress. This combination creates the perfect environment for strong root development — and strong roots are everything.

Because when winter arrives, it’s not about how fast your plants grow… it’s about how well they were established.

What Thrives When the Heat Fades

Leafy Greens — The Gentle Growers

There’s a quiet reward in growing leafy greens this time of year. Lettuce, spinach, kale, rocket — they don’t demand much, yet they give so generously. Their growth is steady, their flavour often sweeter in the cooler weather, and they offer that instant sense of success every gardener needs.

Sow them in small batches every few weeks, and your garden will keep giving long after you’ve forgotten when you first planted.

Root vegetables teach patience. While everything happens out of sight, something powerful is developing beneath the soil — carrots stretching downwards, beetroot swelling slowly, radishes forming in just a few short weeks.
